Truck Tyres in India: Life, Retreading, and What to Check on a Used Truck

On a truck, tyres are a serious running cost. A heavy-truck owner thread puts them second after fuel. Treat the figures below as owner-reported examples, not a guaranteed life.

How Long Do Truck Tyres Last?

Owner-reported figures from a 2022 heavy-truck forum: new tyres around 75,000 to 90,000 km, then a retread good for roughly another 40,000 km, with some casings retreaded twice. Some tyres fail much earlier, around 20,000 to 40,000 km, and some casings cannot be retreaded. Route, load, pressure, and brand change the result.

What Retreading Is

Retreading replaces the worn tread and keeps the original casing. It is common in Indian trucking. A NITI Aayog-supported report, covered in 2026, estimates savings of about ₹25,000 per truck tyre. The same report estimates about 10,000 retreaders in India, with only about one-third formal, so quality varies. Who did the retread matters.

A Cost-Per-Km Example

This is illustrative, using owner-reported branded pricing of about ₹35,000 per pair, or ₹17,500 per tyre, on a six-tyre truck. Six tyres come to ₹1,05,000. Spread over 75,000 to 90,000 km, that is roughly ₹1.17 to ₹1.40 per km for tyres alone. Get a current local quote before you use the number. Tyre cycles also sit inside the wider running-cost picture in the total cost of ownership guide (/blog/truck-total-cost-of-ownership-india-used-commercial-vehicle).

Six Checks on a Used Truck

  1. Manufacturing date: the last four digits of the DOT code show week and year. A very old tyre is a risk even if tread remains.
  2. Tread pattern: wear on one edge or in patches points to alignment or suspension, not only to age.
  3. Cracks, cuts, and bulges: a sidewall bulge or a deep crack means replace.
  4. Mixed brands or sizes: a sign of patchwork replacement.
  5. Retreads: ask which tyres are retreads and who retreaded them.
  6. Spare: confirm it is on the truck and usable.

Tyres Can Cross-Check the Odometer

Wear far beyond what the odometer suggests is one clue that the kilometres may not match the truck. See the odometer guide (/blog/odometer-tampering-used-trucks-check-real-mileage).

What to Ask the Seller

When were the tyres last replaced? Which brand? Any retreads? Any alignment work? Tyres near the end of life are a real replacement cost to put in the offer. See the negotiation guide (/blog/negotiate-used-truck-price-india).
