Truck Mileage Per Litre in India: Claimed vs Real kmpl, and How to Measure Yours
Every brochure shows a mileage number. Few working trucks match it exactly. Read the claim as a stated range for a new truck, then measure the truck you are actually running.
Stated Ranges for the 16-Ton Class
A 2026 comparison of new 16-ton trucks lists stated ranges such as about 8 to 10 km/L for a Tata LPT 1618, about 9 to 11 km/L for an Ashok Leyland Ecomet 1615 HE, about 9 to 11 km/L for a BharatBenz 1617R, and about 10 to 12 km/L for an Eicher Pro 2116XP. The same comparison uses 10 km/L as an average in its fuel-cost examples. These are stated figures for new models, not a guarantee, and a table-only column should be read cautiously. Heavier multi-axle trucks sit much lower. One owner on a heavy-truck forum reported roughly 3 km/L on highways. For how the 1615, 1618, and 1617 compare on power and service, see the model comparison (/blog/tata-1615-vs-ashok-leyland-1618-vs-bharat-benz-1617).
What Changes Real Mileage
Load, route, driving style, tyre pressure, maintenance, and engine age all move the number. A full load and a ghat section will not match an empty highway run. See the GVW and payload guide (/blog/gvw-ulw-payload-truck-explained) and the tyre guide (/blog/truck-tyre-life-retreading-cost-per-km). A used truck can also differ from a new one of the same model, so measure it instead of copying the brochure.
Fuel Cost Per Km
Cost per km = diesel price per litre divided by kmpl. This example uses an assumed ₹90 per litre, not today's pump price. At 8 kmpl that is ₹11.25 per km. At 10 kmpl it is ₹9.00 per km. At 12 kmpl it is ₹7.50 per km. A gap of about 2 kmpl changes fuel cost by roughly ₹2 to ₹3 per km in this example. Put in your own diesel price before you use the figure.
How to Measure Mileage
- Fill the tank completely at the same pump and note the odometer.
- Drive a normal trip with a typical load.
- Fill the tank completely again. Note the litres added and the new odometer reading.
- kmpl = kilometres driven divided by litres added.
- Repeat across 3 to 4 fills, including loaded and empty legs, then average them.
On a Used Truck
Ask the seller for actual kmpl on their routes, loaded and empty, and compare that with the stated range for the model. A large gap is a question, not an automatic no. Running-cost context for the whole truck is in the total cost of ownership guide (/blog/truck-total-cost-of-ownership-india-used-commercial-vehicle).
