BS4 vs BS6 Used Trucks: Which Should You Buy?

Since April 2020, all new commercial vehicles sold in India must be BS6-compliant. BS4 vehicles are no longer manufactured new, though a large used-market pool still exists. BS6 trucks generally hold better resale value and produce fewer emissions, while BS4 trucks are available at a lower upfront price. Both can run on the same fuel available at Indian pumps today, so the decision comes down to weighing a lower purchase price against long-term value retention.

What Actually Changed Between BS4 and BS6

BS4 and BS6 are emission norms: government-mandated limits on pollutants a vehicle's engine can release. BS6 is significantly stricter, cutting nitrogen oxide emissions by roughly 70% and particulate matter by roughly 80% compared to BS4. This required real engineering changes to engines and exhaust systems, not just a label change, which is part of why BS6 vehicles commanded a higher price when new.

The Resale Value Gap

BS6 vehicles consistently hold resale value better than BS4 vehicles of similar age and condition, for a straightforward reason: buyer demand is shifting toward BS6, and BS4's shrinking future, with no new BS4 vehicles ever produced again, makes the used BS4 pool a depreciating asset relative to BS6. This gap tends to widen over time rather than staying fixed, since the pool of buyers willing to purchase a BS4 vehicle shrinks as fewer new buyers see it as a long-term option. Emission rating is one input in a used truck valuation (/blog/how-much-is-my-used-truck-worth-valuation-guide).

Can a BS4 Truck Run on Today's Fuel?

Yes. BS6 fuel, now the only grade sold at Indian pumps, is fully backward compatible with BS4 engines. A BS4 truck runs on it without damage or performance issues. The lower sulphur content in BS6 fuel is not harmful to older engines and in some respects offers better engine protection. This means fuel availability is not a practical barrier to running a BS4 vehicle today.

Running Cost Differences

BS6 vehicles generally show a 5 to 8% improvement in real-world fuel efficiency compared to BS4, alongside potentially lower long-term maintenance costs from the more modern engine and emission-control components. Against this, BS6 vehicles can have marginally higher maintenance complexity due to the additional emission-control hardware (like SCR systems), which some BS4 owners point to as a partial offset. For the wider cost picture, see our truck total cost of ownership guide (/blog/truck-total-cost-of-ownership-india-used-commercial-vehicle). Remaining useful life also depends on age and fitness rules (/blog/vehicle-scrappage-policy-india-older-used-trucks).

When a BS4 Truck Still Makes Sense

  • Short-term or transitional use: if you plan to run the vehicle for a limited period before upgrading, the lower upfront cost of a BS4 truck can outweigh the resale disadvantage, since you are not holding it long enough for the value gap to matter as much.
  • Tight budget with a genuine need for lower entry cost: a BS4 truck can be the difference between entering the business now versus waiting.
  • Regions with fewer restrictions: some regulatory restrictions on older or higher-emission vehicles are more strictly enforced in specific metro areas. Confirm local rules for where you will actually operate before assuming a BS4 vehicle is unrestricted everywhere.

For a buyer planning to hold a vehicle for the long term and prioritizing resale value, BS6 is generally the stronger choice. For a buyer prioritizing the lowest possible upfront cost with a shorter ownership horizon, BS4 remains a reasonable option, as long as the resale trade-off is a deliberate choice, not an afterthought.
